A fun week of social innovation and technology with industry mentors and friends.
In 2015, five Sprout Ideas Camps were funded by the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure. Exclusively for high school students, the camps were held in partnership with OCAD University, York University, and Crescent school, and focused on prototyping ideas for social innovation.
The 2014 Sprout Ideas Camps were held in partnership with the Toronto District School Board, and hosted by OCAD University’s Inclusive Design Institute. Support was provided by Pearson Foundation, Apple Canada, and Promethean Canada. The focus of the camp was on peer learning on social issues through video games, which participants designed using MIT’s Scratch programming language.
TakingITGlobal partnered with Microsoft to launch Innovate for Good, an event series using the Sprout Ideas curriculum. In more than a dozen countries, 50-100 student leaders gathered for an evening of networking and idea sharing, and then a full day where they developed and shared ideas for using technology for social change. Following the events, participants joined the Innovate for Good online community created by TakingITGlobal, and were provided with access to the Sprout e-Course, mentorship, and funding to further develop their innovations.
Sprout Ideas Camps and Events are offered as a partnership between industry and education, with a goal of providing students with an immersive experience to build their social innovation, technology, and design thinking skills. Mentors from industry and post-secondary institutions are engaged to support students in idea development and prototyping, and each event culminates with presentations and feedback from a panel of experts, and a showcase to parents and community members.
